Radio Lab speaks up for Sport Relief
Tue 01 April, 2014A SPECIAL 24-hour broadcast on Radio Lab 97.1FM has seen more than £600 raised for this year’s Sport Relief.
Encouraging listeners to donate through their JustGiving charity webpage, the University’s community radio station produced 24 shows in 24 hours during 20 - 21 March, with people able to donate until last Friday night (28 March).
A series of competitions ran throughout the broadcast via Radio Lab’s Twitter feed, which included listeners having to tweet in a hangover selfie. The best entrant won a VIP night out in Liquid & Envy Nightclub, Luton.
Calum Steel, Radio Lab Manager, said: “The support we received on our JustGiving account has been fantastic. Radio Lab initially hoped to raise £500 but we have beaten that target.”
He added: "We raised money for Sport Relief because a lot of the Radio Lab presenters are studying Sports Journalism and sport has been such a massive part of our lives and how we got to where we are today.
"Sport Relief raises a lot of money for people in the UK and overseas and we wanted to do our bit to help a great cause."
As part of the 24-hour broadcast, Radio Lab presenters Luke Gregory and Jacob Roch followed in the footsteps of Match of the Day pundits Alan Shearer and Robbie Savage.
But instead of sitting on a mammoth 90,000 seats at Wembley, Luke and Jacob chose Kenilworth Road – home of Luton Town FC.
Sitting on all 10,226 seats in approximately three hours, the duo then summoned up enough energy to present their Radio Lab slot from the ground.
