Session 8

Working with Numbers - An Introduction to Significance

Following from basic calculations in lecture 7, session 8 considers probability, statistical significance and chance.

This should provide an introduction to key statistical concepts which are crucial for reading and understanding any quantitative research, as well as a foundation for carrying out some simple  analyses.

By the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • Define and discuss the theory and rules of probability.
  • Calculate probability and create a probability distribution with example data.
  • Describe the characteristics of a normal curve and interpret a normal curve using example data.

The session will include a number of interactive resources, including a data-set to work with, so again you may require the use of a calculator.
