Session 3
Research Designs - Who is Being Studied?
This session will cover populations, samples and representativeness.
The basic nature of sampling and how it might influence findings will be explored and how we go about applying this to our quantitative (numbers) and qualitative (literary) data.
Focus will also be made on the social workforce, including research data, along with the introduction of how these findings are / can be distributed.
Learning outcomes:
- understand what a sample is;
- understand the difference between a complete sample, a representative sample, a simple random sample and various unrepresentative samples, including convenience and purposive samples;
- appreciate the ways in which different samples can influence research findings;
- be able to apply issues of sample bias in research to anti-discriminatory practice issues and stereotyping in social work practice and policy.
