Student Volunteers
Our student volunteers receive comprehensive training to ensure that they have the necessary skills and techniques to interview and support clients. Trained staff are available at all times to assist our student volunteers.
Through the operation of the Law Clinic there is a clear involvement of the faculty and students in public life within the community.
The student volunteers were nominated, and were Runners Up, for the The Lord Lieutenant’s Community Engagement Award as part of the University of Bedfordshire Student Experience Awards 2019. The nomination was focussed on the contribution of the students to the local community through volunteer work and the development of positive relationships.

Some of the other activities which students have been involved in since inception are:
- Fundraising for local and national charities
- Outreach events to other organisations and charities
- Providing support as a McKenzie friend
What student volunteers say
As law student intending to practice law, it made complete sense to get some first-hand experience of assisting in the provision of legal guidance to those who need it and in a real-world setting. The Law Clinic provides just that! It is well managed and well led and provides excellent mentoring and gives a real-life perspective on what one might expect as a budding lawyer. Joint the Law Clinic, it makes sense!
The reason why I joined the Law Clinic was to gain a better understanding of what working in the law field looks like. Prior to joining I had no idea what to expect from a future with a law degree.
I thought, Cool, I'm a law student but what will my first placement/job require me to do? Surely not to attend lectures or write exams? How will I be capable of doing the work that I'm studying for when I have no clue what it is?” Little by little, one Law Clinic session after another, I was able to put these questions to rest.
If you are plagued with imposter syndrome and want to boost your confidence in becoming a future lawyer, as well as enhance your CV with volunteering experience, definitely make an application to join the Law Clinic.
You will gain perspective and skills which, try as you may, cannot be found in books, but will enable you to boldly apply for a future position or internship with a head start.
