The effects of interrupting sedentary behaviour on cardiometabolic risk markers in older adults
Abstract
Older adults are considered one of the most sedentary demographics in modern society. Many bodies of research have indicated the link between prolonged sitting and increased risk of cardiometabolic disease. Short bouts of light-intensity exercise to interrupt prolonged sitting can acutely reduce glucose and other cardiometabolic disease risk markers in healthy adults. However, it still remains to be determined whether interrupting sitting with physical activity can impart similar benefits in older adults.
This research project will focus on clarifying the effects of interrupting prolonged sitting with light intensity exercise bouts on cardiometabolic disease risk markers in older adults.
Research Questions
- What is the association between sedentary time and cardiometabolic risk in older adults?
- What is the effect of interrupting sedentary behaviour with light-intensity physical activity in older adults
