Working Thesis Title

The impact of shift work on physiological and psychological responses in UK Firefighters.

Abstract

Our nation depends on the fire service to respond to major emergencies. Retained and whole time Firefighters are a crucial part of the public health and safety net and represent more than forty thousand individuals nationally. There is wide agreement that firefighters should maintain high levels of physical fitness to safely perform required tasks.

However, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in 2011 in UK Firefighters reported 53% and 13%, respectively. Firefighters also report high levels of poor sleep quality, binge drinking behaviour and poor mental well-being. Chronic inflammation associated with substandard health markers can predispose individuals to PTSD when faced with traumatic events at work.

Yet, there is no current literature assessing these factors with UK firefighters. Therefore, it is of critical importance to: Firstly, understand the effects of shift work on UK Firefighters. Secondly, to develop practical interventions to help manage the occupational safety of the workforce.

Research Questions

  • What is the overall prevalence of poor sleep quality of UK firefighters?
  • How does the type of shift pattern affect the quality of sleep of firefighters?
  • Does quality of sleep affect the mental health of firefighters?
  • What practical interventions can be used to help manage the stresses of this occupation?

About Me

Having completed a BSc in Strength and Conditioning here at the University of Bedfordshire and working directly with the Bedfordshire Fire Service in my undergraduate studies, I will be continuing this work in my PhD study.

I am primarily interested in the relationship between physiology and mental health. Having been personally effected by PTSD, I have seen the positive effects of physical and health behaviour change. Now I am excited to have the opportunity to make practical changes to individuals who are exposed to an array of extreme circumstances. I’m also a motorcycle racer and enjoy a variety of extreme sports!
