MSc by Research
The MSc by Research degree is a postgraduate degree that is assessed by examination of an original piece of research. Although there are no taught modules on the MSc by Research, in-depth training in research methods is provided, with most of the training taking place at the start of the programme to ensure student research projects are robust and follow suitable theory and methodology.
Undertaking an MSc by Research has many advantages when compared to taught Master’s, including:
- Developing skills that could provide useful in your future career. These skills include research methods, critical thinking, independent working, and developing a research-focused approach.
- Getting a taster of research to see whether you would be suitable for a PhD.
- Increased likelihood of getting funding for a PhD, especially if you publish papers from your MSc.
- Perform a research project on an area of interest to you.
- Ideal for someone looking to work in the commercial research environment.

The IHR research programme focuses on understanding the factors that determine health and health behaviour that influence the successful implementation of health interventions. The impact of local contexts, health systems and political economies are taken into account. Details of the specific research areas of IHR staff can be found at IHR staff and students
The IHR accepts MSc by Research candidates in any of the research areas of the institute, subject to supervision capacity. However, applications are preferred in the following three research areas:
- Health and Ageing

These areas draw on the expertise of researchers within the IHR who have extensive research programmes in these areas. The programme is coordinated by Professor David Hewson, who is Professor of Health and Ageing. The three specialities are under the direction of a coordinator, with details of potential research topics for these degrees on the page for each section.
