Intrafamilial Child Sexual Abuse: Addressing Risk and Protective Factors
Tuesday 12 November 2019
Practice Development Seminar
Dr Debra Allnock
Senior Research Fellow
University of Bedfordshire
- 10am - 1pm
- King’s College London, WC2
Dr Debra Allnock is Senior Research Fellow in the International Centre Researching Child Sexual Exploitation, Violence and Trafficking at the University of Bedfordshire. Her research spans nearly 20 years, in both the United States and the United Kingdom, on issues of social justice, child abuse and maltreatment, and children and young people’s disclosures of child abuse.
Intrafamilial Child Sexual Abuse (IFCSA) has been defined as:
Child sexual abuse perpetrated by a family member or that takes place within a family context or environment, whether or not by a family member (Horvath et al, 2014: p9).
In this seminar, Debra will talk about the risks, vulnerabilities and indicators associated with IFCSA, and factors that may protect children, young people and families from it. She will briefly discuss the broad impacts of IFCSA, and the relationship between IFCSA and neglect. Delegates will consider how the evidence base on risk and protective factors can support them to help children andfamilies suspected to be experiencing IFCSA. The seminar will be of interest to practitioners (e.g. social workers, family support and youth workers) working with children, young people and families.
