Thomas Chalk, Graduate
BSc Sport and Exercise Science, 2011-2014
During my time at Bedfordshire I could expand on the taught elements and explore other avenues of research. I did this through working closely with my dissertation supervisor, who was willing to offer me a part-time position as a research assistant. This work led to a published paper in a peer reviewed journal in 2014 which helped me win a fully funded scholarship to study an MRes in Human Biology at Loughborough.
Since leaving Loughborough, I read for a PhD at Leicester University in the epidemiology of chronic cardiometabolic diseases which has led to my current position as a business consultant in data strategy and analytics. I work for Capgemini Consulting UK in London.
I perform business consultancy work with a focus on processing mapping, data strategy, and business model transformation. I was recently involved in a successful data and analytics strategy project for a large government department and co-led successful delivery of a data re-tooling and architecture transformation project.
Prior to my current position I worked for a biopharmaceutical consultancy practice, as well as holding a board seat for Special Olympics Great Britain.
Without the solid structure of my degree at UoB, as well as the extracurricular opportunities offered by members of the Sport Science staff, I would not have been able to build my skills and experience in the relevant areas. Bedfordshire gave me a solid foundation in statistics and modelling methodologies for me to progress in my academic and professional career.
Bedfordshire also taught me to actively seek opportunities to learn and improve my skills and experience. In addition, Bedfordshire taught me the organisational and career development skills I needed to build a professional career.
