Evangelos Moshopoulos
LLB (Hons) Law, 1999
Self-employed lawyer / law firm owner – Lawyers in Kefalonia
What did you enjoy the most during your course?
I studied Law at the University of Bedfordshire (Luton, back in 1996) from 1996 to 1999 and graduated with a 2:1 degree. I enjoyed the fact that the University provided a multicultural environment where students were able to interact and get to know people from different backgrounds.
What were the most important skills you developed during your course and how did these help you in your career?
I believe that working in small groups (tutorials) helped me to develop team skills as well as the ability to deliver coherent answers to legal problems. In addition, studying law helped to broaden my capacity in analysing and solving difficult contradicting legal issues by researching them.
Did you participate in any extra-curricular activities during your studies at Bedfordshire?
While I was studying, I was writing articles for the campus-life newspaper which was issued every month.
Why did you choose the University of Bedfordshire?
I chose the University of Bedfordshire because the course syllabus was attractive and interesting, and the lecturers were very helpful explaining in full complex legal matters. Bedfordshire's location was also handy for Greek students who could fly from the local airport directly to Greece.
What is a typical day at work?
Running my own law firm is a challenging task. I deal mainly with clients who wish to invest and buy property in Greece. I negotiate terms of purchase contracts as well as drafting leasing agreements. Lately I am into banking law, construing loan terms as well as helping customers understand their rights and obligations under a mortgage contract.
What would be your advice to students starting their course now?
My piece of advice to students would be to enhance their knowledge in law by researching, as ways to do this have developed so much in the last decade or so. The more someone digs into the legal science, the more interesting and fascinating it gets. It is not easy but it pays back. I always liked new challenges as, in the end, they helped broaden my spiritual horizons.
What are your future career plans?
I plan to get registered as a solicitor with the UK's Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) so I can expand my business and law firm beyond the Greek borders.
