What did you enjoy the most during your course?

What I enjoyed the most was the ongoing support of my lecturers at every stage of my studies. I was taught by professors who were also legal practitioners, which was a great experience and more than met my expectations. The course itself had an excellent teaching structure with good attention to detail.

What were the most important skills you developed during your course and how did these help you in your career?

I developed my analytical and research skills during my time at Bedfordshire and this helped me tremendously while studying the Legal Practice Course (LPC) at my postgraduate level of study. I had to submit a piece of work in one of the core modules which assessed me on my practical legal research skills. The ability to use Westlaw and Lexisnexis, taught at Bedfordshire, was so useful during this time. I also developed my problem-solving skills, and have been able to apply my legal knowledge and experience to real-life situations in my current job role, analysing a situation and finding ways to reach a proportionate solution.

Did you participate in any extra-curricular activities during your studies at Bedfordshire?

During my second year at Bedfordshire, I was a student advisor at the Law Clinic. My role was to provide pro-bono legal support and referrals to the members of the general public. This was my first legal work experience, and I received good training and guidance beforehand to ensure I had the necessary skills and techniques to interview and support clients.

Why did you choose the University of Bedfordshire?

Before I started my studies at the University of Bedfordshire, I went to an open day and felt very welcomed. It was a friendly atmosphere, and staff were happy to help and answered all my queries. The on-site student accommodation was easy to arrange and the student library facilities also had an impact on my choice. I was provided with a lot of information and guidance to help me make my decision.

What was the biggest challenge getting to where you are now?

Finding a graduate job in the legal field after completing university was at first quite challenging due to how competitive it is. I had to figure out a way to effectively communicate and express myself during the recruitment process. But by showing I have a willingness to learn and develop my skills, I was able to secure the position I have now.

How is a typical day at work?

I currently work as a paralegal in the litigation department of a law firm in Newcastle. A typical day at work is to organise and assess the litigation stages of my caseloads. I represent mortgage lenders in recovering secured debts and mortgage arrears. It is my responsibility to take instruction from clients and comply with the civil procedure rules in all aspects of my role. I also draft witness statements and attend local court hearings on behalf of the claimant to obtain possession court orders. As part of this, I analyse defence claims and draft counterclaim documents to be served in court and to the defendants.

What would be your advice to students starting their course now?

As important as it is to work hard and acquire good grades, it is also essential that students are able to demonstrate to future employers the genuine passion they have to thrive in a career in law. My advice would be to get involved in extra-curricular activities such as the Law Clinic or other pro-bono work that the University has to offer. This made a very positive impact in securing my first legal job after completing the course. Students should also seek to gain legal work experience by way of student placements or vacation schemes to broaden their legal knowledge and build their network by connecting with legal professionals who can offer assistance and advice.

What are your future career plans?

Now I have completed the LPC course, my future career plans are to secure a training contract for two years and become registered with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) as a solicitor. The area of law I would like to specialise in is litigation and dispute resolution.
