Dr Krystal Phillip
Senior Lecturer in Environmental Sciences
My teaching journey started way back in 2000 after completing a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. I spent a few years teaching high school science students and A-Level Biology students. I then went on to further my studies, gained two Master's in Science and a PhD in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.
I conducted my research at International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines where I characterised OsPupK20-2, a Dirigent Gene from Rice (Oryza sativa L.).
Thereafter, my teaching in Higher Education began in 2014, however, I started with the University of Bedfordshire in 2018 as a Visiting Lecturer and have taught students at all levels (i.e. levels 3-7) till now. I took up my current position as a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Sciences since March, 2022.
Teaching
I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and have also completed the PGCE-PCE teaching qualification. I teach Level 6 Biological Sciences and Food and Nutrition Sciences students and Level 7 Environmental Management students as well as supervise students doing their MSc research projects.
I coordinate the MSc Environmental Management and Food Security in Public Health courses and supervise/mentor a number of Visiting Lecturers teaching on those courses. I am the Link/Partnership Coordinator for four of our courses at Shuttleworth College.
I am a member of the Sustainability Forum as well as iBEST research institute. I am also the lead staff on EDI for the department and I have been taking initiatives to organise external relationships/collaborations across UG and PG courses.
