The NHS and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) have a wider information base that you should explore in order to develop your knowledge. These are just some of the areas you will explore in your first year as you develop your foundation-level appreciation for the roles and responsibilities of a healthcare professional.
By exploring the above resources and considering the expectations shared, you will be as prepared as possible for your interview. We are a friendly team and while it may be quite daunting to take this next step in your journey, we do as much as possible to make you feel relaxed and welcomed.
You should make sure that you have developed your knowledge and understanding of what it means to be an occupational therapy. We suggest you:
- Visit the Royal College of Occupational Therapy website
- Visit the Health and Care Professionals Council website
- Go onto YouTube and type in ‘occupational therapy’
- Visit the X (Twitter) feed for the School of Society, Community and Health: @uob_ssch
- Contact a local occupational therapy department to see if you can shadow an occupational therapist
- Attend an open day at the University to learn more about University life and the course from staff, students and newly qualified occupational therapists
- Download any materials online about the professional areas where occupational therapists can practice such as wider health, social care and other work-based settings

Your application - including both your personal statement and interview - should show you are committed to studying physiotherapy for three years: you will be dedicated to your studies because you know what it involves and that it is what you want to do. Physiotherapy is a wide-ranging profession, often working with extremely unwell people. An understanding of only one area of physiotherapists’ work (for example, professional sport) will not demonstrate that you know what you are getting yourself into.
You can show your commitment in your interview by showing you have thought about and researched physiotherapy in general and this course in particular.
Try to show:
- How much you know about physiotherapy
- How it is different to other caring professions
- What subjects you will study on the course
- What interest these subjects hold for you
For some students, it is a shock to work with people who are very unwell so also showing your understanding of this will both prepare you for your studies and demonstrate your commitment to the course and your chosen profession.
Pre-reading suggestions
- Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has some good resources to investigate the profession
- NHS careers is good for researching different healthcare professions
- The British Association for Sport Rehabilitators (BASRaT) is good if you are more interested in sports rehabilitation or sports therapy
