Susan Lane

Tutor in Education Studies

Susan Lane

I have taught English in a number of educational settings since I qualified with a degree in English Literature and a PGCE in English in 1988.

My main experience is teaching KS3, GCSE and A-level English in secondary schools but I have also worked on transition with year 6 students in primary school. I taught in large, multicultural secondary schools for 16 years being head of English, an Advanced Skills Teacher and mentor for teacher trainees, during this time

After this, I spent just under 10 years working as a principal education consultant for a local authority which involved working with a variety of secondary schools, supporting a number of classroom-based initiatives including teaching English, literacy across the curriculum, strategies to support students with English as an Additional Language, adaptive teaching and assessment for learning. I also delivered continued training for newly qualified teachers as well as support the development of teaching assistants and middle leaders.

I studied part-time and long-distance for both my MA (Language and Literacy in Education) at Sheffield and Education Doctorate – final submission Jan 2022 (What mature part-time learners returning to education bring with them to support their study) at Nottingham University.

My time at the University of Bedfordshire as a tutor in education began in 2013. I am passionate about supporting all pupils and considering ways to include everyone. I have acquired a keen interest in the best ways to support literacy across the curriculum and, more recently, how to support adult learners, particularly those returning to education.
