Karen Lindley

Having completed my BA (joint Hons) degree in French and German and my PGCE, I taught MFL to KS3, GCSE and A Level students for 18 years in a number of secondary schools in Northamptonshire, rising from teacher of MFL to the position of Vice Principal.

I continued to study whilst teaching, achieving both my MBA and PhD during this time. Upon completion of my PhD, I decided on a career change and joined the Initial Teacher Training division within the School of Education at the University of Northampton in 2014.

I joined the Education Studies Department as Senior Lecturer at the University of Bedfordshire in February 2016.

  • Post Graduate Certificate in Education – University of Cambridge, 1996
  • BA (Joint Hons) French and German – University of Keele, 1995

Teaching Expertise

  • Course Coordinator for BA (Hons) Education Studies
  • Undergraduate teaching: BA (Hons) Education Studies, teaching on the following units: The Inclusive Society (level 4), Inclusive Curriculum and Pedagogy (level 5), Research Methods (level 5), and Developing Teaching unit (level 6).
  • Postgraduate teaching: MA Education: Unit Leader for Educational leadership in context and Leading change in education. Dissertation supervision.
  • Previous teaching roles at the University of Northampton: BA (Hons) QTS Primary 5-11, MFL and Professional Studies Levels 4-6. Primary PGCE, teaching on the following units: Teaching, Learning and Assessment (MFL) and Professional Studies.

Research Interests

  • The impact of compulsory redeployment on teachers, particularly with regard to the role of teacher self and identity
  • The leadership and management of school change

  • The first year of headship: the experiences, challenges and successes, expressed by newly appointed headteachers during their first year in post (current)
