Creative Technologies

The Creative Technologies Subject (Portfolio) is comprised of expertise in topics related to creative applications of computing, with a number of expert academics in this category. Their teaching and research experience covers games programming and development, game design, computer graphics, 3D modelling and animation, virtual reality, human computer interaction (HCI) and physical computing.

Currently there are two long-standing undergraduate courses in Computer Games Development, Computer Animation and Visual Effects and future developments proposed for postgraduate courses in Games Design and Games Art.

Specialised facilities for Creative Technologies provision on the Luton campus include a Games Console development lab, Animation and Graphics lab and the Mixed Reality Studio, featuring a green screen, VR and motion capture space.

There is also a range of supplementary equipment that can be loaned or used in classes such as further mobile VR headsets, AR glasses, digital cinema and DSLR cameras, handheld games and peripherals, plus other related technologies.

The Creative Technologies typically team supports a number of events and activities over the course of the year, most notably 'Global Game Jam' for which we have been a site host since 2010, WASD Games, BFX Festival, VFX festival

We are also lucky to have some excellent partnerships with organisations such as TIGA, UKIE and Game Anglia.

Undergraduate Courses

Computer Games Development BSc (Hons)

The creation and production of computer games has grown to become a huge, rapidly evolving industry with a growing need for talented technical and creative. This course’s hands-on approach to games development prepares you for the workplace, turning game ideas into playable demos right from the start. Computer Animation & Visual Effects BSc (Hons)

From flight simulators and animated e-learning to VR experiences and blockbuster films, computer animation and visual effects have reinvented our modern society. This innovative course gives you the latest creative, design and technical skills to produce digital content in the form of computer-generated animation or visual effects for entertainment, education or promotional purposes. You gain hands-on experience using industry-standard tools and software while exploring emerging applications such as virtual reality and mixed reality. MSc Games Design

This course provides you with a 360-degree perspective on the game design and development pipeline. Deepen your technical understanding by working with cutting edge game engines; hone your design skills analysing and creating innovative game mechanics; follow industry-standard development processes to bring your ideas from prototype to final release. You will work individually on game projects driven by your personal research interests and collaborate with fellow students on extended, challenging group briefs.
