Prof Jan Domin is Executive Dean of the Faculty.

Jan joined the University of Bedfordshire in 2010 as Head of School of Life Sciences and has been our Executive Dean since 2016.

In his role Jan is responsible for 4 Schools that deliver teaching and learning and 4 Research Institutes.

Jan played a leading role in the development of a suite of new STEM courses and was on the Project board responsible for the development and delivery of a £40m STEM building on the Luton campus. University wide responsibilities include Chair of the External Examiner Committee and Chair of the Timetable Strategy Group. Externally, he currently serves as Chair of the UK Deans of Science Committee.

Jan’s academic background is in Biochemistry and he has 8 years postdoctoral experience at both the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now Cancer Research UK) and at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (affiliated with University College London) working on mechanisms by which lipids control cell division in response to growth factors and in cancer.

Dr John Reynolds is Associate Dean Student Experience & Recruitment, for CATS Faculty.

John has worked at University of Bedfordshire since March 2010. After a number of academic roles in the School of Life Sciences, John moved onto faculty management roles. In January 2014, he was appointed Sub Dean Quality, then in September 2015 Sub Dean International, followed by the appointment of Associate Dean Recruitment & Partnerships in March 2019, and then finally Associate Dean Student Experience & Recruitment in January 2021.

Externally, he is a member of the Renal Association, the American Society of Nephrology and the British Society of Immunology. He is also ex-Chairman of the Renal Scientists Working Party, and was the Scientific Representative on the National Executive Committee, the Academic Affairs Committee, the Education & Training Committee and the Research Committee of the Renal Association.

Derek Stobo spent 15 years at Northumbria University before joining the University of Bedfordshire.

At Northumbria University Derek was Programme Leader ABMS, Director of Programmes for Biomedical Sciences and latterly Faculty Director for Transnational Education. Prior to this, Derek spent 10 years in the NHS, specifically the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) in Aberdeen, as a Biomedical Scientist in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics and Deputy Quality Manager.

He went on to act as the Transfusion Science module leader for the Robert Gordons University Biomedical Science and Applied Biomedical Scientist (ABMS) programmes whist still working at SNBTS.

His strong interest in the delivery of high quality education attracted Derek to the position of Head of Quality and Practice here at UoB within the CATS Faculty.

Dr Carlota Larrea is Head of School of Arts and Creative Industries. The School’s mission is to provide an excellent education and student experience and is driven by values of creativity, aspiration, collaboration andprofessionalism.​

​Carlota, has wide experience of different education models, having taught in Spain, Germany, the US and the UK. She has extensive experience in course management and development, and in working with international partnerships.

Born in Bilbao, Spain, Carlota attended a German School and studied pedagogy in Germany before returning to Spain to complete a degree in English and German at the University of Deusto. After graduation she was granted a PhD scholarship to study Comparative Literature at Pennsylvania State University where she also worked as a research and teaching assistant. Her PhD looked at the use of Hollywood classical film as an intertext in postmodern literature in the work of European and American authors.

Carlota has published on contemporary Spanish cinema, gender and cinema and on national identity in contemporary popular culture.

Carlota is passionate about cinema and spends much of her free time working to protect and expand film culture.

Dr Ed Braund is the Head of School of Computer Science & Technology.

Prior to this Ed worked at the University of Plymouth, where he built and managed a large interdisciplinary school that comprised computing, law, social and political sciences, humanities, and performing arts.

Alongside working as a senior manager in Higher Education, Ed has been a consultant for other universities, specialising in driving growth in student numbers and quality metrics through course portfolio and curricula transformation.

As an academic, Ed’s area of expertise is in Unconventional Computing where his research looks to the information processing abilities of chemical, biological, and physical systems to develop new types of processors, sensors, and actuators.

Prof. Prasad S. Sreenivasaprasad is Head of School of Life Sciences

Prasad joined the University of Bedfordshire in March 2011.

Prasad’s research interests in molecular ecology are focused on understanding the functional and environmental adaptation in fungi that play key roles in managed and natural ecosystems.

• Key research areas include adaptive divergence, population biology and speciation
• Integrating phylogenetics, genomics and bioinformatics with microbiology, pathology and ecology applied from laboratory to field scales

Prasad has developed extensive collaborations internationally to deliver a range of fungal molecular ecology oriented projects. His particular strengths lie in being able to develop and apply multi and inter-disciplinary approaches.

His experience includes:

• Molecular microbial ecology research working with a wide range of collaborators and stakeholders internationally
• Project development, management and International research co-ordination experience with around £4m of grants as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator
• Training and supervision of research staff and students and international capacity building focused in Africa, Asia and Europe

His goal is to develop an integrated systems approach to gain novel insights into fungal ecological interactions and to apply the knowledge and technologies for biodiversity conservation, food security and environmental sustainability within the overarching theme of global environmental change management.

Prof. Ann Weatherall is Head of the School of Psychology supporting a passionate community of scholars, students and partners to develop, disseminate and apply knowledge across a broad range of areas and topics including cognitive, counselling, cultural, developmental, forensic, and positive and social psychology.

The School’s vision is strong community engagement, exceptional teaching/learning relationships, applied research and life-changing professional practice. We are proud of our successes in providing and widening access to higher education.

Although the School sits within the Faculty of Creative Arts, Technologies & Science, psychology is relevant to many other subjects including education, health and sport.

Studying psychology develops skills that are attractive to any employer—including critical thinking, statistical knowledge, clear communication, and a thorough grounding in the science of human behaviour

Dr Maria Simon is our Faculty Technical Manager with responsibility to enable the CATS Faculty to deliver on its objectives.  Maria oversees the management of resources along with technical and administrative staff across all 4 Schools of the CATS Faculty covering multiple sites across the University of Bedfordshire.  Maria oversees Health & Safety within the Faculty and represents the Faculty on the University H&S board.

​Maria’s background is in immune cell signal transduction, with over 15 years of experience of working in this field in both industry and academia.

Alongside being a STEM ambassador, where she continues to provide help and advice to young people thinking about embarking on a Science career and arranging and supporting outreach events, Maria is also a member of:
