Amalia Garcia

Senior Lecturer in Dance and Performance and Course Leader for BA (Hons) Performing Arts

Amalia Garcia

Amalia Garcia, BA, MA, FHEA

Amalia is a performance artist, movement facilitator and an academic, interested in the processes and practices of making movement based dance-theatre performance. She is also an Internal Family Systems qualified practitioner and enquiries from both fields are integrated into practice based research projects.

Originally from Spain, Amalia worked as a freelance performer, dancer and community practitioner with Retina, Willi Dorner Cie and ersatz dance. Amalia was a teacher Fellow in Dance at De Montfort University and became a full-time Lecturer in Dance and Performance at the University of Bedfordshire in 2009.

Amalia is a Senior Lecturer in Dance and Performance and runs the Performing Arts course and teaches across the BA (Hons) Dance & Professional Practice, Performing Arts and MA in Dance Performance and Choreography courses.

In 2018, Amalia collaborated with the charity MIND and the Psychology department at the University of Bedfordshire as the artistic director of Mind ME (The Human Book Store Project). A creative project combining arts and health in which the participants shared their journeys of recovery through live performance and creative expression.

In 2019, Amalia was commissioned to create a performance piece with the Hear and Now project – a collaborative project working with Tibbs Dementia Foundation’s Music 4 Memory, Fusion Youth Singing, musicians from the Philharmonia Orchestra and Tim Steiner. The aim of the project was to develop an understanding of participants’ experiences of engaging in a creative, intergenerational project and to investigate whether taking part impacted on aspects of subjective well-being.

Recently, Amalia has qualified as an Internal Family Systems practitioner and integrates this new acquired knowledge within her creative work. She has collaborated with The Wellbeing centre in Bedford - The Recovery College delivering workshops - Moving in my Recovery - combining art of movement and well-being – the workshops aim to explore through movement how we can inhabit ourselves with greater ease. The proposition is to open up a space that can deepen our capacity to listen to what our bodies are asking of us.
