Studying our Film and Television Production BA (Hons) course will introduce you to the in-depth knowledge and skills you need for the field of creative production, television and filmmaking. In core areas of study, you will discover the fundamentals of the film and television industry Content and Creation unit. Here, you will gather what it takes to be a producer or production manager and discover how films and TV programmes are pitched and commissioned. To build on your practical skills, our unit in Film Production will enable you to take an idea and successfully realise it on screen by giving you the opportunity to develop and practice your production skills. Through a series of workshops and practical exercises, you will apply production theory such as the continuity system, learn to choreograph shots, and experience working in a production team. Delving into more technical areas of study, you will be introduced to the principles of audiovisual material in our Reading the Screen unit.  

Here, you will have the opportunity to analyse aspects of film style such as cinematography, editing and sound design as well as how actors and producers create meaning in such work. To develop your visual style, our Making Images unit will expose you to principles, techniques and the practice of image making and sound recording. Another key component in film production is music, and this is where our unit in TV Studio Music will expose you to a range of practices used in television music production and teach you how to work with presenters and musicians. As a filmmaker or producer, it is also important that you are capable of telling your own stories. This is where our unit in Cinema and Narrative will develop your understanding of storytelling conventions based on various forms of cinema. If you are a fan of fiction, our Fiction Filmmaking unit will provide you with a holistic approach to the production of fiction films.  

You will explore the craft of writing narrative drama for film while also discovering the technologies and techniques used to shoot drama productions. More excitingly, you will have the opportunity to bring these skills together to produce a short fiction film. This links closely with our Writing for The Screen unit where you will examine key elements of classical narratives and practice writing screenplays to improve your writing and storytelling skills. Another essential area of production is the editing process, and this is where our Post-Production for Sound and Image unit will equip you with post-production techniques and technologies for digital sound and images used in film, music and media. More importantly, you will also get the chance to work for our University’s BedsTV station in our BedsTV: Studio unit. This opportunity will help to improve your television production skills, expose you to industry expectations and build good practice.  

Finally, you will have the opportunity to showcase your knowledge and skills acquired from this course in our Major Project: Film and TV Production unit. You will have the freedom to choose between producing a type of film (a drama, documentary, etc.), a script or a dissertation in film-studies. To help you with this, our unit in Research, Development and Industry will develop your skills in production research, documentation and development. To prepare you for the real-world environment, our unit in Becoming a Freelancer will support you in building the confidence to establish contacts in the creative industries while introducing you to the nature of freelance work. With the help of a tutor, you will work on your CV, engage in explicit networking and create a professional development plan to secure work in the field.
