We continually invest in our facilities so our students learn in a modern, vibrant environment suited to today’s real-world approach to teaching with state-of-the-art simulation suites, high-spec technology and laboratories, industry-standard equipment and sector-relevant software.


  • All our Art and Design students develop their practice in our spacious studios in Luton’s Alexon House, previous home of a leading British fashion company, with a 3D workshop, print room and vinyl cutter; you have access to a 3D printer.
  • Our 3D workshop is equipped with a vacuum former, laser cutter, and a variety of drills, saws and other tools.
  • Our print room offers a range of printing options including large-format fine art printing (up to A0); textile printing; risograph printing; and extensive screen-printing equipment.
  • The studio culture for Interior Architecture and Design students reflects industry with high-spec computers using software such as AutoCAD, Vectorworks and Sketchup as well as a 3D workshop for models.
  • Photography students work in a photography studio with industry-standard lighting systems; they have access to a digital darkroom with professional monitors, Apple computers and large-format inkjet printers; an analogue darkroom with high-quality enlargers; and digital and analogue cameras.
  • Our Fashion Design studio replicates the commercial world and includes 3D-modelling and avatar software such as Browzwear’s VStitcher.
  • Animation and Graphic Design students work to industry standards in our set-design studios and stop-motion suite with three-point lighting; they can access Mac computers, Creative Cloud, Dragonframe and TB Paint software; drawing tablets; cameras; C-stands; and coloured gels. There is also a 360-degree green-screen room with motion-capture suit.

  • New, state-of-the-art business analytics suite for data analytics, data mining, digital marketing and search engine optimisation (SEO), allowing you to develop the management and leadership skills needed in today's workplace.
  • Our business analytics suite features £300K of industry-standard hardware and software such as Microsoft Power BI, Vensim (for analysing complex and messy business problems), specialist marketing analytics software, and virtual-reality immersive-experience technology.
  • Our London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) trading room gives you the chance to experience what it’s like to be on the trading-room floor, reacting to live ‘stock-market’ data and building investment portfolios using data on listed companies from around the world.
  • Law students practise court proceedings in our simulated modern Moot Court where newly installed digital technology gives you a true reflection of what it's like to be in an actual court room.
  • We use a range of immersive simulation software to aid your learning including Simulate (Aviation); Semrush (Marketing); Oracle Opera (Hospitality Management); Sage, Eikon and the econometrics software STATA (Accounting, Finance and Economics).
  • All Business students have access to high-spec computer suites.
  • Take the opportunity to gain Excel certification through access to SIMnet Microsoft Office training.

  • Our cutting-edge, industry-standard engineering software includes Auto-CAD software; Ansys; MATLAB simulation software; DesignBuilder; and COMSOL Multiphysics.

  • For cybersecurity students, a new, immersive Security Operations Centre, developed with our partner Switchshop (opens autumn 2025).
  • Rohde & Schwarz telecommunications laboratory.

  • A machine and product design workshop.
  • Specialist automotive engineering lab with state-of-the-art technology including advanced automotive engine demonstrators, 3D printers, motorcycles, go-karts, subsonic wind tunnel, welding bay, metal workshop and much more.
  • Our research lab for robotics has an industry-standard robot arm and mobile robots; programmable drones; integrated oscilloscope; and a powerful AI computer. You access the hardware through Multisim and LabView.
  • Our students also have access to downloadable Microsoft developer tools and VMware Workstation.
  • Our construction courses use industry-standard equipment such as semi-automatic levels, total stations and a robotic total station as well as various building, surveying, measuring and monitoring equipment.

  • If you study physical education with us, you have access to the Bedford Physical Education Archive, a unique collection of materials charting the development of Bedford Physical Training College (1903) to the present day.

We have fully immersive simulation suites at both our Luton and Bedford campuses. These environments prepare students from all healthcare courses to respond to and manage clinical situations. Our simulation facilities are close enough to real life to be used by local providers, including Bedfordshire NHS Hospitals Trust, for training purposes.

Nursing and midwifery

  • At our Luton campus, we have Brewster Square, a brand-new simulation floor situated in our modern STEM building; it takes you from a mock home to hospital, giving you hands-on experience of a range of scenarios you’ll encounter in the real world.
  • At our Bedford campus, we have a new simulation unit with a range of environments including assisted living space; hoarder’s room; nightclub; and social deprivation room.
  • At Bedford, Luton and Aylesbury, our simulation ‘wards’ with medical-grade, high-fidelity mannequins allow our nursing and midwifery students to tackle real-life scenarios in a safe and supported environment.

Allied health

  • Simulated scenarios include a community home; full-sized ward; noisy, dark nightclub; a hazardous work accident; and a cluttered bedroom full of potential risks to patient and responder.
  • Our occupational therapy students benefit from a simulation suite containing a bedroom, bathroom and living area plus a moving and handling room; simulated ward area; and opportunities for placements at our Putteridge Bury Wellbeing Garden.
  • A state-of-the-art mock operating theatre with anaesthetic equipment and a recover room allowing operating department practitioner students can practise their skills in ‘real-world’ situations.
  • Paramedic science students have two clinical-training ambulances (simbulances) so they can develop their skills in realistic scenarios.
  • Physiotherapy students benefit from our simulation hospital ward and ITU; dedicated physio suite; and simulated living spaces.

  • Our laboratories in our modern STEM building include a cell culture lab; analytical science suite with HPLC, FTIR and GC-MS machines; and specialised industry-standard equipment - including qPCR and protein purification and characterisation - for high-end pharma/biotech experiments.
  • Industry-standard biochemistry equipment including ÄKTA start protein purification system; Bio-Rad gel electrophoresis systems; the CF1 cell disruptor; and the latest microfluidics instrumentation; our equipment is supplied by sector-relevant companies such as Constant Systems, Fluidic Sciences and NanoTemper.
  • Forensic science students have use of our mock crime-scene flat with living room, dining room, bedroom and bathroom; a clinical suite for simulated mortuary experience; and the University’s moot court, where you can practise for court appearances using authentic paperwork.
  • Our specialist forensic laboratory has industry-standard microscopes and insectary.
  • A new laboratory information-management system is in place for biomedical science.
