Research degrees

A research degree is an independent, advanced study programme, administered by our Research Graduate School (RGS), supervised by academic staff at our 10 research institutes and lasting between one and seven years. As well as expanding your knowledge in an area of interest, this approach to a Master’s fosters innovative thinking and allows you to make a significant contribution to your field of study. It provides an excellent opportunity for you to engage in rigorous academic research; work alongside experienced faculty; and become part of a vibrant research community.
The majority of our research has been rated ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (the highest ratings possible) by the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF, 2021).
