After you’ve applied to Bedfordshire

Waiting to find out if you have a postgraduate place at your chosen University is always a nail-biting time, which is why we work hard to get our decision to you as quickly as possible. Here, we go through the process step by step so you know what’s going on behind the scenes and are ready to take action as soon as your offer letter arrives.

If you applied through UCAS (nursing students only), you will also get a welcome email from them allowing you to sign into your UCAS Hub and follow your application’s progress.
If you are applying for a research degree, we will send an email letting you know we have received your application before passing it on for consideration by the relevant research institute.
If you applied for a teacher training position via the Department for Education, our Admissions team has a maximum of 30 days to assess your application and get back to you; once we’ve made our decision, your DfE record will be updated and you will also receive an email with further details.
If we need any further information, we’ll request it via email so remember to check your emails regularly. Watch out, too, that our emails don't go into your junk or spam folder; add us to your safe list so you always receive our updates. Also, let us know on admission@beds.ac.uk quickly if you change either your email address or your postal address.
We consider your application in full including your qualifications, experience, references and even the effort you’ve put into completing it. So it’s important the information you supply is accurate and written with care.
We are usually able to make a decision using the information you have given in the application form. However, we may have to contact you to request supporting information to help us make a decision. Reasons to contact you include:
- you require a fee assessment
- you already hold qualifications that meet the entry requirements
- we need copies of qualification certificates
- part of your application is incomplete.
If we ask you for further information, please provide it within the deadline given in our email so we can keep moving on your application – no-one wants there to be a delay.
For some of our courses, an interview is part of the application process; for example, for teacher training, you will be invited for interview at the point of being offered a place on the course. In other cases, we may need to interview all course applicants before confirming our decisions – for instance, if there is only a limited number of places on a popular course or research topic area. If this is the case, we will mention it in your interview invitation.
Interview invitations are sent via email from Admissions but – if you applied through UCAS –you will be able to see if you have been shortlisted to interview on your UCAS Hub; you can also respond to your interview invitation via UCAS.
Your interview invitation will let you know what to bring with you and if you need to do anything to prepare. Make sure you check the date, location and address of your interview carefully. We have several campuses so don’t go to the wrong one! It has happened…
If you are invited to an interview but cannot make the date, please contact us to request an alternative at admission@beds.ac.uk. We will do our best to accommodate your request but this cannot always be guaranteed.
Please email admission@beds.ac.uk if you have special support needs, requests for your interview or queries.
Our Admissions team aims to make decisions as soon as possible; if you applied via UCAS, we work to the UCAS deadline; if you applied via DfE, you should get a reply within 30 days. If you attended an interview, we aim to confirm its outcome as soon as possible after the selection event has taken place.
If you’ve been successful, Admissions will send you an offer letter by post, confirming an offer has been made and outlining the offer details. The letter will also ask you to read and agree to our terms and conditions of admittance. Please familiarise yourself with these before accepting our offer.
If you applied via UCAS or the Department for Education, our formal offer and any conditions will be sent to your UCAS Hub or DfE account.
If we are not able to offer you a place, we will let you know why and offer any useful additional feedback we can. We may also be able to suggest a similar course or research topic that would suit you. Check out our taught courses or research topics and get in touch with admission@beds.ac.uk to talk through your options.
If you applied for a nursing or midwifery course through UCAS and have not received any offers (or any offers you wish to accept), you can add another (sixth) choice through UCAS Extra. Simply find a Bedfordshire course you are interested in, contact us to find out if we have vacancies then add it as your ‘Extra’ choice.
For those applying directly to the University, you should let us know your decision yourself: follow the instructions in your offer letter which will also give you a deadline to respond to the offer; a timeframe for meeting any conditions attached to the offer; and information on any tuition-fee deposit required.
If you applied through UCAS or the DfE and want to accept your offer of a place at Bedfordshire, you must do it via your UCAS Hub or DfE account. Any conditions of your offer have to be met by 31 August.
Once you accept your offer, whatever route you took to apply, you have 14 days to cancel your acceptance if you change your mind.
Although tuition-fee and maintenance loans aren’t available to postgraduate students, you may be eligible for the government’s Master’s loan or the University of Bedfordshire’s alumni fee discount. Some courses also come with bursaries or other funding, and there are educational trusts and charities you can also approach.
This only applies if you had conditions to meet as outlined in your offer letter - for example, you are waiting on examination or academic award results.
If you applied through UCAS or the Department for Education, they send any out-standing results to us. If you applied directly, you need to send your results to us; you will find information regarding this in your offer letter.
Once the Admissions team receives your results or other evidence of meeting offer conditions, we make a final decision on your application and let you know. We understand you’re waiting on our response so we will get our decision to you as soon as possible.
