As a key part of your practice, you will develop the skills for data-driven decision making through working with a diverse range of data sources to inform well-balanced management decisions in our Management Decision Making unit. You will gain the skills to collect, analyse and comprehend organisational, quantitative and qualitative data for the decision-making process. Furthermore, you will learn to understand decision processes used in human resources, financial and sustainable workplace environments to name a few.
To carry with you throughout your practice, our unit in Innovation and Entrepreneurship will allow you to develop the creative thinking skills to perform as a creative leader. You will incorporate elements of change, innovation and entrepreneurship into your performance while considering how this can also be promoted across organisations to build a supportive culture. At the same time, you will examine the organisational barriers to innovation and entrepreneurship informed by participative approaches you can use to facilitate change and therefore continuous innovation as a key to organisational success.
Through incorporating insights from business ethics, sustainability studies and organisational behaviour, you will develop a holistic view of Responsible Leadership and Sustainable Management. In this unit, you will explore contemporary global leadership challenges based on real-world case studies while applying the principles of ethical decision-making and effective stakeholder engagement. This relates to our unit in Strategy: Analysis and Practice where you will be equipped with the practical knowledge of strategic management which you can use to execute effective strategies against business challenges. Working with real-world scenarios created using strategic simulations, you will learn to critically evaluate data sources and industry information to practice making informed strategic decisions in a controlled environment.
Finally, you will complete an MBA Applied Project that will allow you to integrate your knowledge and understanding of business and management with an opportunity to work on a live consultancy project. You will work with an academic lead to apply your research and enhance management and business practice through independent, work-based consultancy. Throughout the course, you will also have the opportunity to work on business, project and consultancy reports to demonstrate your critical thinking abilities, as well as an e-portfolio where you can showcase your progress and skills such as through business simulations. In addition, you will be able to combine your learning with our diverse extra-curricular activities from guest speaker sessions, exhibition visits and entrepreneurship events.
How will you be assessed?
The underpinning philosophy of all assessments is to develop both your knowledge and skills to enter employment as a confident manager with a strong base from which to meet your own aspirations. This requires consideration of your own personal capabilities as well as looking outward at the business world. The aim is for you to become an independent and self-directed lifelong learner. Apart from the formal assessments there will be an emphasis on self peer and group assessment. Tutors will provide feedback on formative assessments to support your development of good academic practice. All assessments are rooted in authentic and practical workplace scenarios to enable the integration of theory and practice in dynamic `real world work contexts. Exams are kept to a minimum. To facilitate learning for all students a range of assessment methods are used throughout the course including: Business Reports to demonstrate contextual insight and professional practice; - Project Plans to demonstrate project planning skills; - Seminar Papers to develop critical analysis skills; - In-class tests of your knowledge of core concepts in context; - Project Report integrates learning throughout the course independently applied in practice; Business simulation where you demonstrate the impact of your strategic decision making. The focus is on the impact of management education to management practice and later assessments require greater complexity and integration through independent study to support your successful transition into work. This is exemplified by two units at the dissertation stage: Management Practice and the Theory into Practice Project. These help you to consider your personal and professional development and the complexity of applying management education in practice once in employment.
Careers
On completing your MBA you will be well placed to fill a wide range of positions. Your team-working skills analytical abilities and understanding of management will be attractive to employers. You would be expected to enter into mid-level management careers in small and medium enterprises and larger organisations or start your own business.
