Using the PAN MORA Practice Assessment document and Overall Achievement Record

The Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (MORA) has been developed by the Pan London Midwifery Practice Education Advisory Group (MPLPEAG) in collaboration with practice partners, mentors, academic staff, students and service users across England and Northern Ireland. The MORA is designed to support midwifery students to achieve the criteria set out in the Standards of Proficiency for Midwives (NMC, 2019) and standards framework for nursing and midwifery education (NMC, 2019). Some Universities have a paper based MORA and some are using an electronic version.

Here is a useful guide to the MORA written by Lindsay Gillman and published by Health Education England:

When a student is in difficulty

Resources

When a student has been identified as having difficulties with their practice learning or development, there are two broad approaches that a Practice Supervisor or Practice Assessor can adopt in order to support the learner:

1. Initiate a student development plan

The University have been using student development plans for several years. The plan sits outside of the formal assessment process and can be used as a first line or ‘soft’ approach to facilitating a discussion with a student. Personal development plans are often used by Personal Academic Tutors (PATs) when a student has had a near fail in practice. Additionally, a student development plan may be put in place after a student has failed in practice to aid their preparation ahead of their next placement.

2. Initiate an action plan

Our current practice assessment documentation and the new MORA have action plans within them which must be completed as a tripartite meeting with the student, practice supervisor/assessor and link lecturer present. This is a more formal process which can be initiated at any time during a placement, but particularly when a student has failed an intermediate assessment.

Both development and action planning are an important strategy for generating documentary evidence for practice supervisors and practice assessors to demonstrate the support agreed with students in difficulty.
