Curriculum Vitae

I am internationally recognised in Applied Linguistics. I have worked extensively with the British Council and other international bodies in more than 15 countries, and with the BBC World Service radio and web. I have been invited as main plenary speaker to more than 20 conferences in over 15 countries around the world.

I have twice been commissioned by the national press to write on my work. I have acted as external examiner for twelve British and overseas universities and exam boards, and have successfully supervised more than ten candidates at doctoral level.

I am on the referee panel for System (the international journal for educational technology in language education) and was for many years on the elected national committee of BATQI (the British Association of TESOL Qualifying Institutions).

My research covers several areas of language education, including:

  • Language Teaching Methodology, including EAP and ESP
  • Teacher Education and Programme Evaluation
  • ICT and CALL in English Language Teaching (including development of substantial interactive educational web materials for the BBC)
  • Discourse and Sociolinguistics
  • Forensic Linguistics
  • Arabic-English translation, Spanish-English translation.

My research record can be seen in my CV below. I was part of the team which submitted in the last three RAE exercises as part of the Canterbury Language/Education group.

I have done extensive work of the BBC World Service website, producing an interactive language learning series "Ten Days" for Latin America and internationally, as well as numerous other interactive language learning modules. I was interviewed by BBC World Service Radio as a specialist in online language learning and teaching.

I was awarded a prize by Elsevier publishers for my article in the journal System entitled 'CALL, Past, Present and Future', which was one of the top three articles downloaded from their website in 2003. As a result of this article I was invited to be the plenary speaker for an online conference in January 2005, then as a main speaker at the IATEFL CALL conference in Cyprus in 2006, then as plenary speaker at the top international conference in the field, WorldCALL (Japan 2008)  I have been commissioned to write two articles on language education by the Guardian newspaper.

My book Discourse and Genre published by Palgrave Macmillan in January 2011.

In terms of research funding, I established CRADLE, the Canterbury Centre for Research, Assessment and Development in Language Education, at Canterbury Christ Church University, and I attracted research and development funding of over £100,000.

I am a proficient linguist, fluent in Arabic, Spanish and in French, and an elected Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists. I am a qualified translator of Arabic and have lectured, taught and researched translation. I have delivered conference talks in Spanish and in Arabic.
