I have a Masters in Applied Linguistics, a Masters in English Language and Literature and a PGCE in English with Modern Languages as well as a PhD in Language Assessment. In addition to extensive experience as a teacher of English, test developer and examiner, I have worked for Cambridge Assessment and lectured at Cambridge, Reading, Oxford Brookes and London Metropolitan Universities. I joined CRELLA shortly after it was founded in 2006 and became Director in 2015. Over those years, it has been a privilege to see the centre and the people in it grow, going from strength to strength.
I research the assessment of language skills, especially written language; the use and impact of assessment results and the relationships between assessment, learning and teaching.
I was delighted to be conferred Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) in 2023, recognising my contribution to the social sciences. I was President of the International Language Testing Association (ILTA) in 2015-16 and am an Expert Member of the European Association for Language Testing and Assessment (EALTA) and the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE), where I also co-chair the ALTE Quality Management System Working Group. I currently serve on the editorial boards of Language Testing, Assessing Writing, Language Testing in Asia and have also served as Associate Editor for Language Assessment Quarterly and Executive Editor on Assessment in Education
I welcome proposals for supervision from postgraduate research students in all aspects of language assessment. My main interests are in the assessment of written language, the use and impact of assessment results and the relationships between assessment, learning and teaching. Before getting in touch, please be sure to read our guidance on applying to study at CRELLA
