About the course

This course will allow eligible NMC and HCPC registrants to acquire the qualification necessary to extend their role in prescribing and make the best use of their knowledge and skills to be able to improve patient access to medications, which aligns with the Government’s policy to modernise the NHS and improve its capacity to deliver accessible quality care to patients.

This course covers a wide range of subject matter, including: consultation; decision-making and therapy; influences on and the psychology of prescribing; prescribing in a team context, clinical pharmacology, drug calculations skills; evidence-based practice and clinical governance in relation to prescribing medicines; and management of effective prescribing including professional ethics, accountability and responsibility.

What will you study?


Non-Medical Prescribing

The aims of this course are to:

•    Prepare you to successfully meet the standards set out by your professional, statutory, and regulatory body within the context of prescribing practice.  Allowing you to apply for registration to practice as independent prescribers upon successful completion.
•    Provide advanced, challenging, and meaningful education and develop skills, knowledge and attitude required for safe and effective prescribing practice.
•    Ensure you are prepared to practice safely and effectively to such an extent that the protection of the public is assured.
•    Develop a critical understanding of the role and management of effective prescribing within your scope of practice and practice environment.

This unit also adheres to The Multi-Professional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice in England (HEE, 2017).

How will you be assessed?


a) Drug calculation numeracy exam. A 100% pass mark is required. 
b) Drug pharmacology exam. An 80% pass mark is required.
c) Practice portfolio of evidence, including 78/90 hours of clinical practice and reflective accounts. Your DPP will sign off on your portfolio and then it will be marked academically and graded. A 40% pass mark is required. 
d) An essay that looks as one of the competencies from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s (RPS) Framework for all Prescribers (2021). This will be marked at Academic L7 and graded. A 40% pass mark is required.

You must pass all 4 assessments to be successful.
