About the course

Please note: if you are an overseas student, you are only eligible for full-time study.

MPhil is a research degree that allows you to develop critical thinking and research skills by doing a short research project based on a thorough critical literature review and engagement with methodologies relevant to your field. It can be a standalone degree or part of a PhD.

The research programme will be designed by you in close consultation with your supervisors. It will help you develop a degree of independence as a researcher.

The assessment is submission of a thesis followed by a viva – an oral defence of your project to two examiners.

Why choose this course?

  • It will allow you to focus on a smaller research project, helping you develop a set of research skills that can be useful for a career in industry or R&D;
  • It gives you an opportunity to thoroughly develop critical thinking and analysis skills through deep engagement with the existing body of knowledge.

Course Leader - Dr Joanne Hill

The MA Physical Education and Sport programme is research-driven and carefully designed to support beginning and experienced teachers of PE and sport coaches to build their theoretical and practical knowledge to support their teaching and career development. The programme is offered in a blended format with the option of hybrid classes.

The research experience of the Course Coordinator Dr Joanne Hill, and that of the rest of the course team, underpins each unit and the programme as a whole. Students can align their dissertations to the current research projects of the course team.

How will you be assessed?

Students undertake two Progression Point assessments during their study. These are aimed to help students to complete their research degrees successfully and on time and are designed to align with the need to compile a thesis for final examination and to simulate the final examination processes. The assessments rest on the submission of substantial written documents and a short Viva Voce examination. The documents contain material that will be needed for the final thesis. Upon successful completion of the second Progression Point, the student will transfer to the PhD.

More information can be found on the Research Graduate School website.
