Studying our Law with Criminology LLB (Hons) course will provide you with in-depth knowledge and skills around criminology and the criminal justice system. By combining these two elements, you will be given an Introduction to Criminology by examining theoretical approaches used to explain crime, deviance and offending behaviour. To support your learning in this unit, you will be introduced to the criminal process in England and Wales and categories of criminal behaviour in our Criminal Law unit. If you are interested in studying criminology among youth populations, our Gangs and Serious Youth Violence unit will allow you to explore the nature, extent and impact of this issue and how to respond effectively using policy, strategy and intervention. As a result, you will then learn about the contemporary youth justice system, discuss the current delivery of youth justice services and explore the current debates around policy and practice in this area in our Youth Justice: Models and Approaches unit.

Shifting to a focus on broader society, you will also examine Violence in Modern Society as a social and cultural phenomenon. You will learn of the legal definitions of violent crime, including its various forms including sexual violence, violence against children, terrorism, and discriminatory violence such as racial or homophobic violence. This unit will allow you to discuss the contexts in which violence occurs while also looking at how different types of media feature violence in ‘entertainment’. While learning about the contexts of crime, you will also consider the complex needs of offenders and how to effectively manage the prevention of reoffending in our Rehabilitation of the Offender unit. In other core areas of study, you will be introduced to various units including Contract Law where you will learn how contracts are formed and regulated, as well as the legal issues that arise when contractual relationships break down.

Separately, you will explore the nature of property and ownership rights in relation to land in our Land Law unit, while also exploring the role of Tort in a societal context in our Law of Tort unit through engaging with and critically analysing case law. To add to the foundations of your law study, you will be introduced to Constitutional and Administrative Law where you will learn of the UK’s constitution and the impact that the European Union and Council of Europe has on this. On the other end, you will also gain a solid understanding of EU law and politics in our Fundamentals of EU Law unit which is crucial for future lawyers who may deal with legal issues raised by Brexit. If you are passionate about human rights, then our International Human Rights Law unit will equip you with the fundamental principles for the protection and promotion of human rights such as education, working conditions and freedom of expression.

To add to this, you will also be introduced to the nature, creation, purpose and enforcement of trusts in our Equity and Trusts unit. To assist you in practice, you will be provided with a solid understanding of the English Legal System that will be crucial in supporting your ability to conduct legal research and utilise legal sources while developing your professional legal skills in our Academic and Legal Skills unit. Finally, you will complete a Dissertation into an area of public interest by analysing and evaluating a range of legal research under the guidance of a supervisor.
