JOG Projects and Activities
David Rowe is working with Jim McKay (recently at University of Durham, UK and currently independent scholar) on the Beijing Olympics and the Torch Relay, and Rowe is also working with Beijing based scholars on the Olympics and the Image of China.
Convergence: the International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies will have a special issue on Sport in New Media Technologies, guest edited by Raymond Boyle and Garry Whannel, due out in Autumn 2010, and contains an interview with BBC Head of Olympic Operations, Roger Mosey.
Professor Garry Whannel was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Cultural Research, University of Western Sydney during September 2008, researching the Olympic Games, giving two public lectures and completing a book chapter with Professor Rowe (UWS) and Professor Boyle (University of Glasgow).
Chair in Olympism: Raymond Boyle was the 2008-9 Chair in Olympism at the Centre d’Estudis Olímpics (UAB, Barcelona, Spain) and gave his inaugural lecture on the topic of Why Sport Matters: New Challenges in the Digital Age.
Raymond Boyle and Garry Whannel were both invited to speak at the University of Malaga Summer School, in 2008.
Understanding the Olympics: John Horne and Garry Whannel have been commissioned to write a book, Understanding the Olympics, for Routledge.
CRESC: As part of a book series for the prestigious ESRC Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change, John Horne, Alan Tomlinson, Garry Whannel and Kath Woodward (OU) have been commissioned to write a new edition of Understanding Sport. The team met to discuss the project at UCLAN in Preston in February 2010.
