The members are established researchers of great experience and considerable reputation, recognised by their peers around the world as being central figures in the development of cultural and sociological analysis of media sport. They have previously collaborated in various combinations. All have engaged on research work of relevance to this project.
David Rowe has been doing research on tabloidisation and on the relation between journalists and academics. Alan Tomlinson and John Sugden have published extensive research on football’s international governing body. Raymond Boyle has researched the impact of the new media on sport journalism. Garry Whannel has been working on celebrity culture and the transformation of news. Hugh O’Donnell has produced extensive cross-cultural work, most notably in Sport and National Identity in the European Media (with co-authors Raymond Boyle and Neil Blain).
