Challenge-based learning

Challenge-based pedagogy refers to a specific approach to teaching and the curriculum where activities and assessments are designed to help students grapple with real world local and global challenges.

This approach is often associated with the United Nations sustainable development goals (UN SDGs). Some disciplines have specific approaches such as the Business and Management Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). Regardless of discipline, Bedfordshire curricula should be designed to encourage students to engage with these challenges.

A challenge-based learning experience is where the learning takes place through the identification, analysis and design of a solution to a socio-technical problem. The learning experience is typically multidisciplinary, takes place in an international context and aims to find a collaboratively developed solution, which is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable (Malmqvist, Radberg, and Lundqvist, 2015).
