Bedfordshire celebrates eighth place in University Green League

The University of Bedfordshire is celebrating being ranked 8th out of 154 UK universities in the latest People & Planet University ‘Green League’.

Compiled by the student campaigning network, People & Planet ranks universities on their environmental and ethical performances.

The University received the equivalent of a First Class degree for its eco-friendly practices with full marks for Environmental Sustainability (Policy and Strategy), Environmental Auditing & Management Systems, Energy Sources, and Water Reduction.

Further highlights include the University’s work in Ethical Investment, Carbon Management, Waste & Recycling, and Human Resources for Sustainability.

The People & Planet University Green League table is published with the aim to make the sustainable developments of publically funded universities transparent.

Bedfordshire has seen its position rise dramatically; originally being placed at 124th, it rose to 11th and is now 8th in the League, placed above all Russell Group universities.

Some highlights regarding the work Bedfordshire is doing to be an eco-friendly institution include the Model UN negotiation event on climate changerainwater harvestingsolar panelselectric vans and wildflower meadows.

Bill Rammell, Vice Chancellor of the University said: “I am extremely proud that we have again been recognised for our green policies and sustainability initiatives.

“We work closely with all our stakeholders to reduce the University’s environmental impacts and we promote sustainable thinking, education and practices for our current and future graduates, staff and communities.

“We also recognise our responsibility to ensure that our graduates have a sound understanding of the importance of sustainable development to enhance their role as global citizens and their future employability.”
